A couple of years ago the Society acquired a Victorian gas lamp for the club premises at Field Place. The lamp post was originally one of four that once stood guard at the level crossing gates at Lancing railway station. The acquisition is thanks to the efforts of our Treasurer David Baldwin.
Lancing Level Crossing - circa 1878
David had first noticed the now forelorn-looking lamp post shortly after he recently moved south to the area from his home in Embsay North Yorkshire. A natural curiosity caused him the wonder how long it had been there and what had happened since it was originally installed - the invention of the internal combustion engine; The Boer War; The First World War; The 1926 General Strike; The Wall Street Crash; The rise of Adolf Hitler; The Second World War; The dropping of the Atom Bomb; The invention of the jet engine; The Space Race; The closure of Lancing Works; The end of steam traction on British Railways.
Time had obviously taken its toll and only the cast iron post remained - the metal lamp housing on the top had long since departed.
In July 2014 David made contact with Network Rail to see if there was any way of acquiring this piece of Railway history - the purpose being to restore the post and lantern to it's original glory.
Following a short period of positive and productive negotiations David managed to acquire the lamp post for the Society. It was delivered to the Club track at Field Place on 30th October 2014 where restoration work will commence. Ultimately it is planned that the lamp post will be restored to full working condition and re-erected within the Society grounds.
Below is a selection of photographs of events. These will be updated from time to time as restoration works progress.
Update : 12th November 2014. Photos 9 & 10 below show restoration works commencing with the application of paintstripper. In this case a product called KlingStrip was used. The Lamp Post has been stripped back to it's original cast iron condition.
